Global Sufficiency Network NewsletterAugust 2009
You may have been one of the over 600 people who attended the Global Sufficiency Launch on July 29th. If not, you will have a chance to watch the video of the San Francisco launch in a week or two on our site.
Since the launch, we’ve had an outpouring of well wishes, people joining as members and commitments to assist Global Sufficiency Network with time, talent and treasure.
It is a distinct privilege to be a part of a community filled with such generosity, gratitude and possibility!
We’ve received hundreds of communications - emails, faxes, phone calls and hand written notes. Here is what we are hearing from you. . .
• You want to be connected in local groups -
GSN will post Local GSN Community Group Contacts on the website in the near future. If you wish to be a local contact please email marilyn@globalsufficiency.org. The role of the local contacts is to facilitate local gatherings of GSN members and interested others.
• You want to have a say about what GSN does and how it does it, so that is stays relevant to what matters for your life and for the world you envision
We are seeking your input, questions, comments, ideas, and sufficiency related resources, blogs and articles that we can share with others through our site and newsletters. Send us your ideas by replying to this email.
We are reviewing the feedback forms collected at the 15 different launch location and will be in touch with people on an individual basis to follow up in the next few weeks.
• You want to know how we will use the funds we raised -
Global Sufficiency Network will use the money it raises to provide educational materials and opportunities that advance the message and practice of sufficiency, and to implement numerous programs designed to achieve its mission. (See 3 year plan for more information.)
• You want action – While you value a community of practice where you can develop and enrich your own sufficiency, you are deeply committed to the impact we can have on the world.
GSN will facilitate action in the following ways:
We ongoingly encourage you to take action to generate sufficiency in your life, families and communities. The actions are as unlimited as your creativity and ingenuity – host a sufficiency swap, a book group, a play fest, a circle of sufficiency and on and on. Send us an update and a photo or video of your action, project, initiative or gathering. We’ll post it on the site to inspire others.
We are seeking feedback about our Action Plans for the next 3 years. Click here to view. Please send your feedback to marilyn@globalsufficiency.org
In every newsletter we will recommend a monthly action designed to further the message and practice of sufficiency.
Action for the Month
The recommended ACTION for this month is to create a short definition of sufficiency that works for you and share it with others.
If you are a hermit share it with a few others. If you are a community connector share it with hundreds of others.
Engage others in a dialogue about sufficiency and what is possible as we generate it. One of the best ways to deepen something in your life is to teach it to others so get out there and share!
What is Sufficiency?
“It is an experience, a context we generate, a declaration and a knowing that there is enough and we are enough. It resides in each of us and we can call it forward. It is a consciousness, an attention, an intentional choosing of the way we think about our circumstances. It is an act of generating, distinguishing, making known to ourselves the power and presence of our existing resources and our inner resources.” The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist
If you'd like to see other ways Sufficiency is defined, watch these videos. Reply and tell us what Sufficiency means to you.

Personal Practices that Generate Sufficiency –
I am a part of a group writing a book about Sufficiency (available In April 2010). The leader of the effort is Miriam Hawley, one of the Authors of the ground-breaking book Our Bodies Ourselves. Many of the other writers are a part of the Boston Sufficiency Team who host the Annual Global Sufficiency Summit.
One part of the book involves exploring the personal practices that effectively generate sufficiency in your life.
Here's an overview of some of the practices discussed in the book.
being in nature,
being with pets and animals,
moving your body (exercise, stretching and dancing),
breathing deeply,
yoga,
sleeping enough,
releasing emotions,
listening to music that moves and inspires you,
participating in Landmark Education programs,
using Seven Stones Leadership Sufficiency Cards,
participating on a small group sufficiency calls,
snuggling with loved ones,
laughing and be silly,
being generous
being in gratitude
journaling and writing,
creating collages,
meditating,
teaching others about sufficiency,
giving,
talking daily to sufficiency partners or buddies
creative expression
distinguishing scarcity when it is present
What ways do you generate a sense of enoughness in your life?
Reply to this email if you have something to add to the list.
Quote of the Month: Lynne Twist quoted Jeremy Rifkin from NPR during the Launch Event.
Instead of trying to produce more and more, in less and less time, why not produce just what we need to sustain our relationships over an extended period of time? - Jeremy Rifkin on NPR 7/14/2000

Final Notes -The video of the launch will be available in mid-August for your viewing if you missed it on July 29th.
This newsletter is intended to be an opening for dialog not just a one-way communication. Please share your comments with us. We want to hear from you.
P.S. Please spread the message of Sufficiency by forwarding this newsletter.
The Global Sufficiency Network exists to fuel a global viral conversation for sufficiency - catalyzing action to address scarcity as a fundamental root cause of the environmental crises, the social justice crisis, the spiritual crisis and the economic crisis.
