My daughter came home for a visit recently and wanted to use "The Red Blanket". When I looked at it I was horrified at how tattered it had become. I was about to throw it away when I was hit by a flood of memories of how much that blanket has been loved by our family.
My mother had made it for us about 15 years ago and had used batting from a quilt that had been my grandmothers. The cotton batting is so bulky and heavy which is part of the reason why it is so wonderful and cozy. We used it until it's cover started to wear off and was just too awful to look at. I recovered it with some red flannel sheets in a simple way to give it a little more life, and it did. Looking at it recently the temptation was so great to just throw it away, but I can't. Our red blanket has layers of cloth and memories which are not so easy to part with and so I covered it again.
This time with brown flannel and embellished it a little with some colorful stitching on the top band.
