I recently had a happy teaching moment when one of my sewing students, a young man asked to be taught to crochet. I showed him the chain stitch which is a basic crochet stitch, he worked at it for about 10 minutes and then said he did not want to do it any longer. I knew he was frustrated that it was not coming to him more easily. I asked him to work through the challenge of it and reminded him that to get good at anything there is a period of struggle and difficulty. I was happy that he was willing to try and after a while his hands and mind got it. He let me know that he could actually do it with his eyes shut.
I think this is one of the issues of our time, not having the patience to work through challenge. We give up way too soon but its the failure and working through it that often leads us to success. Experience has taught me that.
